I am curious to know "is anybody making money from stock investing"? I need to clarify my question a bit. The question is for investing since the beginning (of your first pot of money into stocks), separate from 401K.

That depends on what you mean...  I made money yesterday, and also in the last month, but I have a lot of ground to make up to recoup my net losses over the last 5 years.

The only long term holding I still have in the black is Berkshire Hathaway.  On the other hand I've only been investing since 2001

Well, at least you making some money back now. Yes, the question for the poll is since the beginning, in your case is 2001.

I voted, "Yes" I'm still ahead of the game. My total portfolio's unrealized capital gains (value vs cost basis) fell from "slim" at Qtr3 '08 ended to negative at the close. Considering captured gains, dividend and interest accumulated since my 1993 beginning, I'm pretty sure I'm still ahead. Much more of this market though, and I'll have to go back thru my annuls and check that!

That is good for you. I am somewhat fortunate to make some money during the late 90's. Even though the market is bad during the current credit crisis. I still manage to be a bit ahead. I am mostly in CDs now. Only a small portion in stocks now.

Started my equity investing in January 09....Wanted to get involved in mid 2007 but was forewarned (my father is an avid investor, and has done very well for himself). Sat back and waited until early '09 to drop my first 5k in to play with, even though I was being told it still wasn't the time. I've followed the markets closely since 2005 or so, and am very anxious to see where we are 18 months from now...

Finished 2009 well in the green as I'm sure you all did. Total proceeds including dividends excluding capital gains were 231% for 2009 trading primarily small cap stocks (HGSI being my big winner) as well as short term plays on tech, energy, commodities and a few financials. I was pretty flat from August until mid-October when I began picking up gold, silver and copper. Gains on these are minimal to date (less than 20%). Not a bad first year as an individual investor in the market if I may say so myself, although I don't expect I'll see another bull rally like we had this year for some time.

I am looking to maximize my earnings in 2010 via bio-tech, small caps, commodities, and options plays on earnings reports. Only "long-term" investments I am interested in would be precious metals (including ETF's, equities that stand to benefit from increased commodity prices, and commodity purchases).

Wow! That is very impressive gain. Is your total stocks investment over 10K, 100K, or some other range? Perhaps you can share your trading ideas with us in the future if you don't mind.
