Heart Attacks and Drinking Warm Water The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals, not cold water, maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating. For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. Well, this is unfortunate news for those of us who enjoy milk as our dinner beverage of choice. Milk is 98% water. Bodes well for those who enjoy table wine, not to mention, wine has known health benefits.

I did not realize water can contribute health problem until now. There are many other "bad" habits which I may not be aware of. Prevention is the key for health problems.

Interesting tidbit about water consumption: people who drink 5 or more 8 ounce glasses of water a day have half the risk of heart attack than those who drink 2 or less 8 ounce glasses of water a day. What this suggests is that, beyond having your water hot during a meal, it is also good to have lots of water outside of meals.

The drinking warm water only during a meal doesn't make sense. Just for starters, what about eating ice cream? Same "problem".
Also, the oily "sludge" does not react with the acid in the stomach --- fats and oils are not digested in the stomach, but in the small intestine by bile and pancreatic enzymes.

You are quite right, you need good enzymes to digest oily and fatty stuffs. That is why eating salad before meal is good for you because it provides some enzymes in your system to digest food for you. If you don't have enough enzymes in your system, that explains why some many people are over weighted nowadays because those fatty stuffs are still in your body. Wow! We got a health professional on the forum now. Personally I think people nowadays do not have enough enzymes in their systems, why? People are eating more junk foods: chips, soda, fast foods, etc. Those food do not provide enough enzymes for our body to digest foods. We need natural foods like vegetables and fruits. Also if any foods above certain temperature, the enzymes will die. I used the digestive enzymes personally. The one I got is what they used "Isotonic" technology. The stuff about cold water just makes no sense. It is not congealed sludge that causes heart attacks and I doubt you could drink enough water cold enough to really affect the temperature of the blood by the time it leaves the stomach, goes through the liver (much of it), through the lungs, then back out to the circulation after mixing with the venous return from the rest of the body.
You should also be somewhat careful about adopting the dietary practices of Asians as they lead the world in stomach cancer. Maybe their secret to longevity is the hot liquid but it may also be the tea (at any temperature), their weight, their activity levels, their genetics, tofu, or something else. You do have to watch correlation studies. It may be that people who drink more water have fewer heart attacks for many other reasons. That they are more health conscious in general and doing it on purpose, that they exercise more and so get thirstier, that they are younger (thirst goes down with age), that they are generally healthier (ditto sickness), and that their diets are different (fiber and carbs require more hydration than fats) comes to mind.
As for anti-oxidants (from another thread) - they are very interesting and hopefully something will pan out. Unfortunately the traditional anti-oxidants like vitamins C and E have been tested and at least over the course of a few years do not seem to help (and in some cases harm). Interestingly, iron levels are predictive of heart disease in men. This could be because iron is a potent oxidant or, as in the discussion above, for some other reason such as increased meat consumption.
It may be that we just need to test longer term studies or that we need to look at more potent anti-oxidants. Of course, the purveyors of the supposedly more potent stuff want you to believe the later theory but I would be cautious of claims of huge health benefits as they should be easy to prove but for some inexplicable reason haven't been. My feeling is that they would prove anything they could so if they haven't.........
Reservatrol has had some interesting results in animals. It cannot possibly explain the "French Paradox" as one would need to consume something like 1000 glasses of wine daily to get to similar doses (but wouldn't it be fun to try). However, saying it is not responsible for one thing does not mean it is not responsible for another and, hopefully, further study will pan out that will allow for it to be widely recommended.

Think about what you just said. Overweight is from poor digestion? Quite the opposite. If you don't digest the food it stays in the gut and never makes it into the body. While sitting in parts of the gut where it doesn't belong it might cause symptoms such as cramps, bloating, gas and diarrhea but it will not make you fat. People with malabsorption lose weight. One diet drug (orlistat - Xenical by rx or Alli as OTC) works by blocking the enzymes that help digest (and absorb) fat. The food you absorb from the intestine (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) are broken down by the body into carbon dioxide, ammonia, and water. (Ammonia is toxic, so the body adds carbon dioxide to form urea, which the kidneys extract into the urine.) The body exhales carbon dioxide and water vapor, and urinates urea and water. Any unabsorbed food is excreted. In addition, the intestines are home to a massive bacterial colony which works on the partially digested food / digestive enzymes / bile salts.
